ABOUT FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Future Directions is a 501c3 nonprofit agency that is certified by the Ohio Department of Behavior Health as a Peer-Run Organization. We offer two complementary models of recovery support: peer‑facilitated groups and open‑room discussion integrated with arts and crafts.  The open‑room model encourages socialization, creativity, and emotional expression while members work on projects together.  Additional spaces including a fitness center, relaxation areas, and a television lounge, provide members with opportunities to unwind, build wellness routines, and engage in positive social interaction.Â

The agency’s core mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment for individuals recovering from mental‑health and substance‑use disorders. Â
Members gain access to tools, skills, and peer support that strengthen their recovery and enhance their independence.

Future Directions serves adults (18+) in Cuyahoga County who are actively participating in their recovery. The facility’s maximum occupancy is 130 individuals, as approved by the City of Lakewood and Ohio Building and Fire Codes. The agency does not discriminate against any federally protected classes.

HISTORY
Recovery is easier to sustain when a community knows how to support it.

Future Directions began as a daytime activity group at St. John & West Shore Hospital’s Far West Center, serving individuals diagnosed with mental illness.  Founder Linda Wurz developed an arts and crafts program focused on handcrafted wooden toys and puzzles, providing members with meaningful, goal‑oriented tasks.  Completed items were sold at craft shows to fund social events and community outings.

In 1996, Future Directions became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and moved to 11511 Lorain Avenue, where it operated for 22 years.  After Linda Wurz’s passing in 1999, J.J. Commisso was chosen as the new Executive Director and has remained dedicated to the agency’s mission.  In 2002, Future Directions became a certified Peer Run Organization through the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health (ODBH), maintaining accreditation continuously.

The agency relocated to its current site at 2070 West 117th Street in 2018. In 2020, Future Directions expanded its services to include peer‑facilitated educational and support groups, offering multiple recovery pathways for individuals with mental‑health and substance‑use disorders.  In 2022, the agency assumed responsibility for the Painters in Recovery program, demonstrating its commitment to supporting community partners and sustaining valued services.
